Domain Name Price Increases

Back in November 2015, Nominet, the company responsible for all .UK domains, declared that it would be raising its wholesale domain prices and removing the multi-year discount. These changes are taking place on Tuesday, 1 March, and will put Nominet prices on par with international registries and their domain prices.

Russell Haworth, CEO of Nominet, said in a statement:

“We’re committed to running a first-class service for .UK registrants, including our renowned customer service, and we’re doing more than ever before to ensure the .UK space is safe and trusted home for all. But costs have risen considerably since we last changed the price, and we need to compete in a promotion-driven industry.”

Because Nominet are raising their prices, we have to raise our prices. From 1 March, the prices will be £8.50 per year for, and extensions.

.UK domains will not be affected.

On the same date the price of our .com domains will also increase to £15.00 per year.

Unfortunately this price increase is unavoidable, but we will endeavour to keep our price at the lowest possible point for our customers.

New Fundraising Total for 2014!

We just wanted to update you all now that all of our fundraising from 2014 has been completed and collected.

We’ve managed to raise a staggering £1,150.00 for the PKD Charity, which will go towards providing much needed support for renal patients, will help fund vital research into renal medicine, and will undoubtedly help the charity to continue doing their outstanding work.

Thank you so much to everyone that has helped us to reach that total, and to everyone that have supported us with coverage, social media shares and likes, and general encouragement.

Fixing the WordPress White Screen of Death

If you have been using WordPress for a little while then chances are you will have come across the “White Screen of Death”, which comes in a few different forms.

Sometimes it may be that you have an error message with it, such as an error establishing a database connections, and this obviously gives you a very good indication of where your problem is.

However, more recently we have noticed that some of our customers have updated their WordPress Installs to the latest version and since the updates had reported being plagued by this random white screen.

The white screen is just that – plain white – no error messages or codes, and upon page reload the page will display again.

Pretty annoying for a visitor, and massively annoying for the admins as often it happens as you are trying to save a content edit, losing all of your hard work.

Luckily, if this sounds like a problem you are having, there is a really easy fix.

Here’s how:

1. Open a plain text editor on your machine and create a file called php.ini

2. Insert this code into the file:

<? phpinfo(); ?>
memory_limit = 128M

3. Save it and upload the file to your web hosting Public Directory – where your WordPress files are located.

Thats it – this should have solved your problem.

Why? Because more often than not the blank white screen relates to an issue with the memory limit that is set on WordPress and this file is a quick and easy way to increase that limit.

We’ve Raised £1000 for the PKD Charity

We’ve Raised £1000 for the PKD Charity

On 1st January 2014 we committed to raise a target of £1000 for the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Charity, who fund vital research into a common renal condition as well as offering support to patients and their families.

The Knavesmire IT team set out to run the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon on the 12th October 2014, and along the way run in the Major Series Bramham 5K Mud Run, Jane Tomlinson Hull, Burnley, Leeds and York 10K’s, and the BUPA Great Yorkshire Run 10K in Sheffield. We are proud to have completed every single one, with a marathon finish time of 4 hours 57 minutes.

We are pleased to announce that as of the 1st November 2014 we managed to hit our target, and would like to thank all of those who kindly donated, with a special mention to one of our customers – AG Channels, for their kind donation to get us to our target.

Don’t worry though, as the JustGiving page will remain active until the 12th January 2015 so that you can continue to make much needed donations to this great cause.

If you would like to find out more about PKD then please spare a moment to visit the PKD Charity online.

Thanks again everyone, we couldn’t have done it without you!
